John Townley - Project Lead Teacher - Secondary Digital Technologies and Engineering - Southern River College Gosnells WA
I first started focussing on the 5Cs as a part of my school Robotics Club in 2017. It was obvious to me that for students to compete in Robotics competitions required high level teamwork, presentations and technical skills sharing. To be successful they needed to focus on interpersonal and skills relating to confidence and communication. As I began the process of activating student metacognition of these skills through self-refelction and discussion I noticed clear improvement in learning dispositions and confidence as well as the skills themselves. Sharing this with the extraordinary group of teachers in the Schools Plus supported 3 year cluster project - Gosnells Robotics Clubs resulted in those ideas around 21st Century Skills and curriculum General Capabilities quickly developed into a coherent predagogical framework centred on skill development progressions from F-10. The project Coach is Adrian Bertolini who has extensive experience in education and is funded by Google.org through Australian Schools Plus. The teachers who develop a class focus on these skills report that students enjoy the content and student surveys show that students do significantly improve their self-preception of those skills over time. The FRS Framework integrates easily with all curriculum areas. The great thing about it is that we already teach these skills everyday, the FRS framework simply encourages metacognition and provides a common language and the website a few helpful resources.
